Lane Field
( Navy Field ), Dirt Oval
San Diego . End of Broadway at Pacific Coast Hwy
Here is some info from Judy Swink
The name Lane Field was given to the site in 1936 with construction of the Padres' ball park. Before that, it was known as the "YMCA Army-Navy Field".
The Army-Navy Field was created in 1919-20 as a "playground for bluejackets of the Pacific Fleet" based in San Diego (SD Union 10-15-1919, p.6), to be developed and managed by the YMCA.
From a 1922 photo , it was built within the race track course Which may or may not have continued once the "playground" was developed. Don't know when the racetrack was built but, IF it continued in use circling Army-Navy Field, both uses went away when the site was converted to a Padres' ballpark in 1936.
For most people who have post-1936 memories of after the ballpark was built, was at the site of the current, original convention center and perhaps included the site of today's Marriott Hotel. The "playground" for the military was transferred to this site, thus the name of "Navy Field" at the new location. So, calling the former Harbor Dr. site simply "Navy Field" is confusing to anyone lacking historical knowledge of the changes. Perhaps you can change the "Navy Field" in parentheses to "YMCA Army-Navy Field, 1919-1935.
